Press release
26 February 2019, Gazipur
Human chain and memorandum to Agriculture Minister demanding
to stop the introduction  of  GE Golden Rice

Today, on February 26, 2019, four organizations of farmers and agricultural workers have formed a human chain and rally to resist the aggression of multinational seed companies in Bangladesh and demanding to stop introduction of GE Golden Rice, that is harmful for health and environment. The human chain took place in front of Gazipur District Commissioner’s office, Gazipur. Following the human chain, a memorandum that includes four point demands was submitted to Agriculture Minister via   D C, Gazipur.

Md Mamun Hossen of BAFLF conducted the human chain and rally while BAFLF General Secretary Abdul Mazid presided over the same organized jointly by the National Women Farmers’ & Workers’ Association (NWFA), Bangladesh Agricultural Farm Labour Federation(BAFLF), Bangladesh Sramajibi Kendra (BSK), Development Education for Poor (DEP). Among others Golam Sorowor of BSK, Md Monirul Islam of DEP, Md Rahimuddin of BRRI workers’ association and Nasrin Sultana of NWFA spoke at the rally.

Nasrin Sultana said in her speech, Golden Rice is genetically engineered rice. The multinational companies’ paid scientists and propagandists are facilitating and promoting Golden rice telling that this rice contains plenty of vitamin- A, iron and zinc, which will enough to address the problem of Vitamin-A deficiency, including nyctalopia. But according to a report published by the USA’s Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), Golden Rice has a very low level of beta -carotene that is not enough to combat Vitamin A deficiency. Compared with golden rice, sweet potato has fifty times more beta- carotene level and can be grown on non-arable land. Besides, there is a lot of vitamin-A in common fruits and vegetables that are available and plentiful both cultivated and uncultivated sources in our country such as Sajnapata, Kolmi, Puisak , Data, Sweet gourd, bean, papaya, melon, jackfruit, mango, banana, pine apple  etc. Therefore, Golden Rice is not the right solution to eliminate Vitamin A deficiency; rather it is an ineffective solution. Syngenta and IRRI could not prove that the Golden Rice would really solve the problem and not cause the biological contamination of our local variety. Solving the problem of Vitamin-A deficiency is not a technological issue; rather it is related to poverty and balanced diet habit. Poverty and lack of purchasing poor are major cause of malnutrition including VAD. Introducing golden rice is not proper solution to address Vitamin-A deficiency. The introduction of Company patented the so-called Vitamin-A rice will make our agriculture production system more dependent on multinational companies and have serious impact on the traditional agricultural system. She explained Golden Rice commercialization equates to billions of worth corporate profit in expanse of public health, environment and farmers’ seed freedom. So Govt. must abstain from Golden rice commercial release.

BAFLF general secratery Abdul Mazid said  the multinational companies have targeted Bangladesh as laboratory  for the trail  of their GM crops and using people and farmers as guineapigs for their own interest. Unfortunately, the fact is world first GMO vegetable Bt. brinjal has been introduced in 2013 and the first GE Rice is in a stage very close to release in Bangladesh. GMO crops are controversial in terms of bio safety, environment and public health. Transgenic seed is developed by injecting genes of different species into another species. Scientists could not prove that transgenic seed will not cause biological contamination to local variety and any risk caused by consumption of the GM food crop. In view of these concerns, there are international rules and regulations in regards to the introduction of GE seeds. Those scientific and legal warnings are not followed properly in the introduction of GMO crops in Bangladesh. Syngenta and IRRI cannot give enough evidence in favour of any positive gain of gene incorporation from maize to rice. In the case of Golden Rice trail, there are considerable lacking of impartial assessment, transparent and independent safety research. Without ensuring the safety of the public health and environment, without protecting farmers’ interest, the main objective of the approval of Golden Rice for commercial cultivation is to serve multinational companies interest. If the Golden Rice is introduced in Bangladesh agriculture and farmers will affect dangerously, food security will be more vulnerable and will have serious effect on the food sovereignty.

After the human chain, memorandum was given to Agriculture minister via DC Gazipur for the implementation of four point’s demands that include:

1. The introduction Golden Rice has to be stopped.
2. Trail of all GMO crops presently going on must be concealed and commercial cultivation of Bt. Brinjal has to be stopped.
3. Ban on import and use of harmful chemical pesticides.
4. Update Bio Safety Rules 2012 and ensure its proper implementation.

Protest Rally against commercial release of Golden Rice in Bangladesh.

BAFLF and NWFA declared two months long protest activity to resist Golden Rice Commercialization.

Bangladesh Agricultural Farm Labour Federation (BAFLF) and National Women Farmers & Workers Association (NWFA) demand to stop GMO golden rice commercial release in Bangladesh. With the slogan ‘Stop golden rice! Defend local variety of rice!’ NWFA and BAFLF organized a protest a rally at BRRI campus, Gazipur.

BRRI is developing genetically engineered rice GR2E based on most productive rice variety of Bangladesh BRRI Dhan 29.This transgenic golden rice was developed by taking gene from maize and evolved it into BRRI Dhan29.After two years of confined field trails, multi- location field trails are going on. BRRI have sought regulatory approval from the government for an ‘un confined’ field test prior seeking release approval. Recently new agriculture minister declared ‘Golden rice is very close to release, it will be available soon in Bangladesh and environment ministry will give clearance to the rice for production in farmers’ field’. It is also said that golden rice cultivation will be started within two or three months.

BAFLF and NWFA  organized this protest rally to denounce government declaration of the approval of golden rice commercialization . BAFLF general secretary Abdul Mazid presided over the meeting while Md. Mamun of BAFLF conducted the same. Farmers &   agricultural workers were present the meeting to express their concerns about govt. plan to release Golden rice. Speakers said introducing GMO golden rice is not proper solution to address vitamin- A deficiency. Rather our ecology, biodiversity , food safety will be at great risk . Scientists could not prove that transgenic golden rice will not cause biological contamination to local varieties and even could not give any evidence in favour of any positive gain of gene incorporation from maize to rice. It may cause serious threat to local high yielding popular rice variety.

Abdul Mazid of BAFLF  said the paid scientists and transnational companies agents are spreading the propaganda that Golden rice is good enough to meet half of rice eating consumers daily deficiency of vitamin- A and it would be of the  same price  as other rice variety once released for commercial farming in Bangladesh. The experience of Bt. Brinjal  proved that it is not true. It is a trap of taking control over our seed market and making our agricultural production system completely dependent on transnational companies. He explained that GMO seed are patented. In the case of Bt. Brinjal at first farmers had been given free seeds along with inputs cost, fertilizer, pesticides and cash money. But now Bt. Brinjal seed are seven times higher in price than normal Brinjal seeds. So the main intention of introducing GMO crops in Bangladesh one after another is to make more corporate profit in expanse of consumers’ health and farmers’ seed freedom. It will affects our food security and food sovereignty. This cannot be allowed.

Lila Khanom of NWFA said Farmers don’t want GMO golden rice; people are alarmed with the news of govt. approval of Golden rice commercialization. In Bangladesh we have lot of sources of Vitamin –A  in common fruits and vegetables that are available from both cultivated and uncultivated sources and cheaper in price. She demanded Govt. must abstain from introducing Golden Rice as well as any GMO seeds. She added that ‘our protest against golden rice commercial release will continue’ both inside BRRI and all over Bangladesh.

From the protest rally, two months long protest activities programmes were declared that includes Human chain in front of DC office Gazipur and  giving memorandum to DC, Gazipur, Protest Rally in Dhaka and giving memorandum to Agriculture minister, press conference and national consultation in Dhaka and giving memorandum to prime minister.

Besides to strengthen effective resistance against GMO golden rice it was decided to form a national Forum with farmers organization, agricultural workers organization, civil society supporters and NGOs working on same issues.

STOP GOLDEN RICE! Network

August 8, 2017
Press Statement

Asia farmers‘ network resound strong call to Stop Golden Rice!

Stop Golden Rice! Defend our Farmers‘ Rights! remains the resounding call of Asia farmers‘ network against the impending commercialization of Golden Rice in Asia. Four years after the militant uprooting of Golden Rice, waves of protest mobilizations stirs anew in the Philippines and Bangladesh against its commercialization, while debate rages on in Indonesia, India and other Asian countries where Golden Rice is planned for commercial release.

Today, a protest campaign in front of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) was held by hundreds of farmers and civil society supporters led by the National Women Farmers and Workers Association (NWFA) and Bangladesh Agricultural Farm Labour Federation (BAFLF).  A public forum on GMOs and Golden Rice was also held by NWFA and BAFLF few days back last August 4-5 in Gazipur to bring the public issue to the fore.

Nasrin Sultana of NWFA explained that “Since 2006, we have consistently protested and even formed a barricade in BRRI against Golden Rice. We denounce the government approval of Golden Rice commercialization. The public must be alarmed with the great risks of Golden Rice consumption to food safety and public health. Golden rice commercialization equates to billions worth of annual corporate profit in expanse of consumers’ health and farmers’ seed freedom. This cannot be allowed”.

The Golden Rice debate is marred by conflicts and controversy.  After decades of research, the efficacy, safety and viability of Golden Rice remains uncertain and pose grave threat to food safety and consumers’ health. It is within this ground that government of China and academic journal publishers sanctioned and retracted the research work of scientists who engaged in unethical feeding of Golden Rice to children whose families were not informed that they were being fed Golden Rice last 2012. To date, there are no published reports proving that Golden Rice is safe for human consumption. Add to this the recent published study stating that Golden Rice is unfit for commercial cultivation due to poor agronomic performance leading to low yield.

Aliansi Gerakan Reform Agrari (AGRA), a national peasant federation in Indonesia in statement expressed that “Indonesia, as with the whole region, is also threatened by the growing corporate control over agriculture and consequent erosion of traditional seed resources. The government promotes GMOs and 80-90% of our soybeans and corn imports are GMOs. The Indonesia National Food Policy proclaimed to boost volume of food production, mainly rice production with the application of genetic engineering of 19 food crops, primarily rice, corn, sorghum, and soybean. Golden Rice will be an eventual real threat to our farmers, making it an imperative for us to campaign and support the Asia wide campaign against Golden Rice commercialization”

India host two-thirds of the world’s rice varieties. Campaigns in India have gained momentum against genetically engineered rice, including the Save our Rice network, the Folk Rice Movement and the Seed Mothers movement; all working to conserve and salvage thousands of traditional and indigenous seed varieties which would have otherwise been eroded by the onslaught of hybrid technology and conventional chemical inputs in the past decades. Recent news on the establishment of IRRI's South Asia's Regional Centre in city of Varanasi in the last quarter of 2017 have raised alarm as it may serve as a pretext to the government’s aggressive move to commercialize genetically engineered rice.  The bitter tragedy hundred thousands of farmers succumbing to suicide in the past decade is linked with debt chains acquired from the seed monopoly of Monsanto thru BT Cotton in the cotton belt region remain to haunt the country.

In Philippines, the Golden Rice issue was stirred anew with the renewed application for field trial and direct use last February 2017 despite the absence of public dialogue. To commemorate the historic uprooting and protest action against golden rice last August 8, 2013, hundreds of farmers will gather to hold a public forum in Nueva Ecija in Central Luzon, the rice granary of the country where Philippine Rice Research Insitute (PhilRICE) Golden Rice experimental fields are located. A civil society roundtable discussion on August 10 and a public dialogue between government and civil society will also be on August 11 within the national capital to re-echo public opposition against Golden Rice.

“Golden Rice is a greedy scientific enterprise of IRRI and corporations masked as humanitarian aid. It deviates from the real solution to malnutrition which is to fight poverty, uphold genuine agrarian reform and promote diverse nutritious, natural and easily accessible food sources. Its ultimate interest is to secure top profit arena and monopoly control of global food system since billions rely, produce and consume rice. The looming Golden Rice commercialization anchored on neoliberal market will flood the region with massive and unregulated trade of GM rice. This spells doom to our country where the quantitative restriction on rice importation will soon be lifted. Golden rice is a death reaper to our local local rice sector as traditional rice varieties will be vulnerable to GMO contamination. Stop Golden Rice! is a call to defend life and freedom against this oppressive claws of corporate control” stated by Cristino Panerio, National Coordinator of the Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para sa Pag-unlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG), a local farmer-scientist movement in the forefront of campaigns against golden rice commercialization in the past decade.

Since its inception in 2001, Syngenta (currently merged with ChemChina), Rockefeller Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation among others have poured millions of funds thru the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the research and promotion of Golden Rice, a genetically engineered rice touted to address Vitamin A deficiency. But, strong and consistent peoples’ protests in the past decades impeded its planned commercialization particularly in Bangladesh, Philippines and India.

In August 8, 2013, more than 400 farmers led the historic uprooting of Golden Rice experimental fields at Pili, Camarines Sur to signal strong opposition to Golden rice trials and commercialization. Corporate proponents thru their media mouthpieces, such as Mark Lynas ang Patrick Moore, vilified the farmers’ direct action. The peasant movement in the Philippines, however, reiterated their dissent against Golden Rice as a legitimate conviction to defend rights against corporate control of agriculture thru GMOs.

An Asia Farmers’ Conference against Golden Rice was subsequently held in 2014 with more than 70 farmers, people’s organizations from the region echoing their stand against Golden Rice. The campaigns proved successful as it triggered broader public attention, institutional debate and exposed the deceitful corporate claims on the Golden Rice issue in the national and international arena – ultimately leading to postponement of its commercialization.###

Established in 2014 and reconvened this 2017, the Stop Golden Rice! Network is a regional campaign collaboration of more than 30 organizations in South Asia and South East Asia. It works against the commercialization of Golden Rice and other forms of genetically modified crops, towards a society with equity, food sovereignty, sustainable and ecology-based agriculture. This is joint statement of its lead convening organizations and networks.
